As the Foundation Partnerships Lead, Tom is responsible for connecting U-M research opportunities with foundations and non-profit funders, particularly those with an interest in impact through future commercial implementation. With a primary focus on the life sciences, Tom assists U-M researchers in identifying potential funding opportunities, building relationships with philanthropic partners, and providing guidance on navigating the non-governmental funding ecosystem.
Before joining the Innovation Partnerships team, Tom was an Associate Director with the Milken Institute’s Science Philanthropy for Accelerating Research and Collaboration (SPARC) team, where he was responsible for overseeing the team’s biomedical research grant portfolio. Prior to that, Tom was a Program Officer at the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine where he assisted in the administration of fellowship programs funded by both federal and private sponsors.
Tom holds a PhD in Biological Chemistry from the University of Michigan and a B.S. in Biochemistry and Chemical Biology from Wayne State University.
