Affordable Access Plan Provisions: Advancing Global Access to Life-Saving Therapies

At Innovation Partnerships, we are dedicated to maximizing the societal impact of discoveries from University of Michigan labs. A critical part of this mission is ensuring that life-saving therapies developed through U-M research are accessible to underserved populations worldwide. To achieve this, we have incorporated an Affordable Access Plan provision into our therapeutic licenses.

Our Affordable Access Plan provision creates a collaborative framework for sharing information and working with licensees to encourage affordable global access. It builds on established industry best practices and leverages the robust humanitarian ecosystem that supports voluntary licensing initiatives.

Key Advantages of the Affordable Access Plan:

  • Aligns with existing practices: A majority of major pharmaceutical companies already use affordable access plans for their late-stage therapeutics. The provision was created by the University of California Los Angeles and the Medicines Patent Pool and has been broadly adopted by several major research universities and licensing organizations.
  • Flexible and non-prescriptive: The framework adapts to individual licensee strategies, allowing them to balance global access with commercial goals.
  • Backed by global health organizations: Partners can draw on the expertise and resources of organizations like the Medicines Patent Pool to expand access sustainably and effectively.

Through this provision, we strive to foster early-stage therapeutic development while partnering with licensees to make
pharmaceutical advancements accessible to those who need them most.
