Student Ownership Policy

Under the Office of Technology Transfer’s policy, students will own all IP they create unless the student creates the IP in his or her capacity as an employee. In other words, if a student creates IP, and the IP does not derive from the student’s employment for the University, the student will own the IP.

Tax Considerations

The University of Michigan’s policy on the distribution of tech transfer licensing revenues provides that a percentage of net revenues are shared with U-M employees that are inventors or developers (“inventors”) of the licensed patent rights, materials, software, or other licensed inventions. Occasionally, a U-M inventor will desire to redirect (or “waive”) all or a portion of his or her share of revenues to a U-M entity.

Technology Transfer Policy

This Policy implements Section 3.10 of the Bylaws of the Board of Regents. The Policy further defines the ownership, distribution, and commercialization of rights associated with Intellectual Property developed at or received by the University of Michigan, and describes the general obligations associated with the technology licensing process.

The Advance Grant

The ADVANCE Grant program like MTRAC, will provide a strong incentive for faculty with early stage technologies at the Michigan public universities to engage with their university’s Technology Transfer Office (TTO) and commercialization activities.
